Reviews and you – Part 1

Transcript of presentation Reviews and You – Part 1

Hi and welcome to our reviews and you presentation. Our presentation is broken into two. In this presentation we explain what happens in a review. And we look at how we conduct a review in these changing circumstances. In our second presentation, which is also available on our website, we focus on what information you can provide to show us you're covering each learning area.

Our team is here to help. If you're left with any doubt after working your way through our presentations, please get in contact with us. No one has ever had their home schooling registration cancelled as the result of a review. In this first presentation, we look at what's covered in a home schooling review, the requirements of registration and how they relate to a review. And we look closely at one of the requirements of registration, which is regular and efficient instruction.

So, what is a review? A home schooling review checks that the requirements of registration are being met. A home schooling review is not the same as a school report or assessment. A review does not assess your child's achievement or your role as the educator.

Instead, a review looks at how you and your child have been covering the learning areas. A review doesn't have to be about the here and now. To show us you're meeting the requirements, you can draw on activities from the past. It's important to note that being selected for review is completely random. We do not target families based on gender, age, or registration history.

Any child who is registered for home schooling can be randomly selected for review. If you have more than one child registered for home schooling, you can choose which child's registration we review. This can be any child you've registered for home schooling. You may also choose when the review happens. We allocate your review to a month, but you're welcome to change the month if the one we allocate doesn't suit.

As mentioned, a review checks that the requirements of registration are being met. These are the requirements outlined in the Education and Training Reform regulations. The main requirement we assess is that a student receives regular and efficient instruction that, taken as a whole, substantially addresses the learning areas. This has two major components. The first is regular and efficient instruction.

This will be the focus of the remainder of this presentation. The second is that you substantially address the learning areas. This will be the focus of the second presentation. So how can you demonstrate that your child has received regular and efficient instruction? Providing regular and efficient instruction to your child requires an ongoing program, something that continues through the registration period, providing information on when or how often your child receives home schooling instruction will help you address this in the review.

You don't need to tell us every single thing your child has done, and you don't need to tell us what's happening right now. Instead, just give us information on the general schedule. This could take many forms. You could send us pages from your home schooling planner or diary demonstrating when different learning areas have been covered through a typical week.

Or you could provide a list of the resources you've used or activities your child's completed. Regular and efficient instruction can be demonstrated by talking about your learning schedule. For example, a comment such as ‘my child does written work in the morning and practical activities in the afternoon. This will give us some insight into the regularity of the instruction.

Alternatively, you could talk us through the resources you've used to support your child's education. This list of resources would again demonstrate regularity as it shows us the extent of instruction. We hope this gives some clarity on what a review is and how you can demonstrate regular and efficient instruction. It's important to remember that reviews are very flexible.

Thanks for working your way through this presentation. The next presentation addresses how you can demonstrate that the learning areas are being substantially addressed. Please watch that presentation and if you still have questions, contact the homeschooling team via email. We would be happy to help.
